[Update: August 16, 2018] Busan Bukbu Office of Education “Our hands are tied regarding the dog meat trade in Gupo Market”.

Superintendent Daesong Kim, Busan Bukbu Office of Education

In May of 2018, we sent a letter of response to the Busan Bukbu Office of Education with copies of the letter to the Ministry of Education and Busan Bukgu District Office. We received the below response from the Busan Bukbu Office Education which, due to a current lack of volunteers, will not be translated word-for-word but instead summarized.

It seems the attitude of the Busan Bukbu Office of Education typifies the treatment of the dog meat issue by South Korea’s indifferent and incompetent government as a “hot potato” while millions of dogs and cats suffer a hellish torture.

The response states:

– The Busan Bukbu Office of Education sent previous requests to the Busan Buk-gu District Office to close down the Busan Gupo dog meat slaughterhouses/shops. The basis for the requests was the list of prohibited acts stipulated in Article 9 of the “Educational Environment Protection Act.” The Busan Buk-gu District Office, however, claimed that the dog meat slaughterhouses/shops were not prohibited under this Article and therefore they did not have the authority to close down those businesses involuntarily.

– Regarding the Busan Buk-gu District Office’s Task Force for the Gupo Dog Meat Market not actively working to resolve this issue, please contact the Busan Buk-gu District Office directly.

– We will do our best to make sure the students at Deokchun Elementary School do not go near the Gupo Dog Meat Market.
