We are reaching out to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) to help put an end to the dog meat trade in South Korea. WSAVA’s mission is to “make welfare issues an everyday consideration for small animal practitioners”. They can use its influence and knowledge to educate the community about animals and to increase community awareness of all issues affecting animal welfare.

Video: Korea Observer. The Dog Meat Professionals: South Korea.

Two search results on Naver (the most popular search engine in Korea) – the first one was for so-called “Health Food Centers” which commonly sell dog elixirs and cat elixirs (also known as dog soju and cat soju); and the second one was for “dog meat restaurants” reveals the sickening scale of South Korea’s dog meat demand: 12,979 Health Food Centers; and 4,024 restaurants in Korea and 171 restaurants in the vicinity of Incheon.

Even if half of these ‘Health’ Food Centers and restaurants serve dog and cat ‘ingredients’ in one form or another, imagine how many dog/cat slaughterhouses must be present in Korea to supply these outlets.

There are laws in South Korea against selling dogs and cats for consumption, yet these laws are blatantly ignored.

World Small Animal Veterinary Association: Speak Out Against The Dog and Cat Meat Trade in South Korea

Dear members of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association:

We are reaching out to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association to help us bring an end to the Dog Meat Trade in South Korea.

We ask you to please watch the videos of South Korea’s dog meat industry: https://youtu.be/_ZVQjgGb4RQ, https://youtu.be/Q4qoObbdsO0

Every year 2.5 million Korean dogs are slaughtered and consumed. The farming and methods of slaughter are unregulated, and this allows the meat trade industry to practice in an entirely uncontrolled environment, placing these animals in horrific conditions and treating them with unimaginable cruelty. The fight to end this barbarity is being waged by activists around the world, and with increasing awareness it is gaining momentum. With the support of credible organizations such as yours, we are sure that we can put a stop to this. As veterinarians and medical professionals, your voices will be heard above others and will be respected and acknowledged. Please join us in this fight by promoting our campaign.

The methods utilized in this unregulated industry are barbaric, and the conditions under which these animals are kept are horrendous. It is well-documented that the treatment of these dogs is unimaginably cruel and inhumane. From birth to death they are kept in cramped cages raised off of the ground, so that their feet never touch the ground their entire lives. They are fed food wastes in extremely unsanitary conditions. Their treatment during transport to slaughter is horrific. They are packed so tightly into cages like stuffed animals that many die from being crushed by the weight of the other dogs. They must endure extreme heat and cold, and are given no water during the days-long trek, so that many die of dehydration.

The slaughter methods themselves are nothing short of sadistic and inhumane. They promote the misguided belief that the adrenaline release which occurs at death improves the quality of the meat, so that the dogs are purposefully tortured and made to experience extreme fear and suffering at slaughter. This often takes the form of prolonged beatings while being hanged, and cats are often boiled alive to make “tonics” which are purported to treat ailments such as rheumatism.
As veterinarians and professionals in animal welfare, you are able to appreciate the negative impact that this practice has on our society. This is not just an argument against an unjust and cruel practice. It is not an argument against what people should and should not eat. It is an argument against the treatment of fellow living animals. It is an argument against the negative health impact that this has on us humans.

As stated in your mission statement, the Animal Wellness & Welfare Committee (AWWC) goal is to make welfare issues an everyday consideration for small animal practitioners. It can use its influence and knowledge to educate the community about animals and to increase community awareness of all issues affecting animal welfare. We are asking you to put your considerable influence behind our efforts to end this cruelty.

An online petition calling for your support in ending the horrendous South Korean dog and cat meat cruelty is in progress: https://www.change.org/p/world-small-the-animal-veterinary-association-world-small-animal-veterinary-assoc-speak-out-against-the-dog-cat-meat-trade-in-s-korea

Hello, I’m calling to speak to the President of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association to ask for his help on an important issue regarding the cruelty against the companion animals in South Korea.

If I could explain: dog-meat consumption is currently being practiced in South Korea, even though it is illegal under South Korean Law – but the laws are not enforced. The dog and cat meat trades involve extreme and widespread animal cruelty, and the animals suffer unimaginable pain and distress. They cannot speak for themselves, which is why I am calling on their behalf. And, I believe that your organization would wish to be made aware of this issue, as you would not want to ignore the illegal and immoral cruelty being carried out on any animal, and particularly not on ones that are loyal, trusting creatures, which look up to us humans as their guardians.

These illegal trades are being allowed to continue by Korean authorities – even though there is growing opposition from pet owners across South Korea, and throughout the world.

So, I am asking you to please speak out against this cruel trade and urge the Korean people to enforce their own laws, not ignore them, and to show compassion to their companion animals, and also respect to their own citizens, by bringing this trade to an end.

With the Winter Olympics coming up in 2018, this is the time to make change; this is the time to stop the illegal, inhumane and unnecessary cruelty. I know that South Korea has many beautiful, admirable, and noble practices and customs worth preserving, but this is not one of them.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

I pray that God will open the eyes of the South Korean Chinese and other Asian people and make them realize what evil they are doing. The torture to these innocent and intelligent animals is unbearable to them. I have four collies and they are sooo smart and loving. They are my children and I treat them with love and respect. What is wrong with these people? Are they blind? Dont you have anything else to eat? These people are mentally ill and the Humane Society needs to step in and save these innocent animals. The 2.5 million they torture per year and more is just insane!!!
