On August 22, 2017, Animal activists/organizations including Busan Korea Alliance for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(KAPCA), ADF, Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth(CARE), Solidarity of Animal Rights Activists, marched down the Busan Gupo Market protesting against the dog meat trade.

Finally, a step forward in the campaign to shut down the notorious Busan Gupo Dog Meat Market. It’s taken numerous campaigns by many groups and individual activists for a lot of years, and countless reported cases of horrific cruelty, for the Busan government to finally take this action. The Korean government is very good at taking the heat and doing nothing to change, so we must keep up the pressure!

On August 17, at the Gupo Dog Meat Market, 34-year-old Health Food Shop employee Kim OO found a dog that had escaped, tied it with a metal pipe rope, and cruelly dragged it down the street, causing a public outrage. On September 2nd, Kim OO (54 years old) was arrested for stealing a dog that was walking alone and made him into dog elixir at the Gupo Dog Meat Market. As these related incidents continue, the voice of the citizens demanding a fundamental solution of the Gupo Dog Meat Market is growing.

In response, on September 13, 2017, Busan.com reported that a Task Force (TF) team had been formed and will begin operations to resolve the problem of the Gupo Dog Meat Market.

The Busan-Buk-gu Office announced that the TF team, headed by Buk-gu deputy mayor Kim Yoon-il, will include the Economic Promotion, Administrative Support, and City Management departments. Opinions from other parties such as animal protection groups and the Dog Meat Trade Associations will also be sought.

The TF team will begin by stopping on-site slaughter; allowing the voluntary removal of illegal slaughter facilities; removing display cages; managing signboards; eradicating the illegal private use of roads; and holding meetings with the trade association. In the mid-to-long-term, the team will encourage Gupo Market dog meat vendors to transition away from the dog meat industry and promote the revitalization of this area. The Industrial Management team, Sanitation Administration team, and the Hygiene Guidance team will all be conducting periodic joint crackdowns.

The Gupo Dog Meat Market issue is a long standing problem in Buk-gu, and one most often avoided among the government officials, with their frequent petition demanding “give us the solution.” As a result, the expectation of the first dedicated TF team for the Gupo Dog Meat Market is high, from both within and outside the District Office.

Gupo Livestock Trade Association President Yong-Soon Park stated that “80% of the dog meat vendors agree and are willing to actively cooperate in either transitioning to other work or closing down their businesses if their local government is willing to provide support for the transition.”

Deputy Mayor Kim stated, “Although there are limits to cracking down under the current law, I will do my best to prepare measures that citizens can empathize with.”

These torturers are useless and barbaric people. They don’t deserve to live. Our company will never purchase anything from So. Korea or ever visit So. Korea until they become civilized and share the Western World’s compassion and kindness to these wonderful companion dogs. The government should be ashamed of itself for allowing this to happen and allowing So. Korea to be branded as a barbaric and uncivilized country. Stop this practice and So. Korea will gain a better reputation in the world.

I’ve visited your beautiful country twice in my life without knowing your evil practices of torturing animals to death for human consumption. I shall never visit and spend money in your country again. Nor shall I let any friends/family or neighbors visit. You can change things and i hope you do soon.

It is shame that these butcher’s, killer’s in their own society, has committed such a crime against humanity. Without conscious, they desire the foods of the dark world, where Satan rules as lord. Thus being said, I can only pray that God will pass his judgment and lay his wrath against the people who continue to abuse or torture animals or children the same. I pity those beast who practice acts against humanity, and I curse them to HELL ! This practice or habit, is insane, jealous, and criminal before God or man. Please STOP this practice or habit of the killing fields that has absorbed the blood of an innocent animal or child. Please STOP the Dog and Cat meat market and the Yulin with the Bok nal festival’s immediately, before it is too late.

I keep wishing there was some way to punish that evil rat who dragged that poor dog to death, i see that picture and i wish i could kill him. if we could have a campaign to get him in trouble and make him pay for his sadism, it would send a message to others that we wont stand by and just watch. I wish i knew how to do these things.
