KARA rescued a dog, “Bokdeongi” with severe injury of collar cutting into his neck, from Yangju.

Sharing for Korea Animal Rights Advocates (KARA)

A stray dog gave birth to a puppy in a drain outside of a rural village. A local resident named the puppy “Bokdeongi” (means fortune, luck) and soon became his guardian.

Unfortunately, the first problem started soon after the guardian got a collar for the puppy. Despite his good intentions, he did not realize that young dogs soon outgrow their first collar. As a result, as Bokdeongi began to grow, his collar began to cut into his neck, slowly strangling him. Soon it began to cut into his skin, creating a painful open wound around his neck.

Bokdeongi would continue to recognize his guardian and greet him, but soon the guardian realized the distress Bokdeongi was in. However, as is typical of dog behavior, because of his immense pain he would not let anyone touch him. This prevented his guardian or anyone else from removing the old collar and treating the wound properly. To make matters worse, the summer weather meant the injury was likely to rapidly become worse. When KARA learned of this emergency we came to the village and tried to bring Bokdeongi to a facility where he could be properly treated. But he remained wary of strangers and kept his distance. It ultimately took three days of effort, but we were finally able to bring Bokdeongi to safety.

We brought Bokdeongi to an animal hospital for medical treatment. His neck injury was severe at this point, but after his treatment and hospitalization is complete, we hope to return him to his guardian, along with some helpful information on how to properly care for dogs.

There are many stray and abandoned dogs like Bokdeongi throughout the country. A lot of people leave their dogs tied up outside 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without giving them any attention. They don’t know how to properly care for dogs. We hope that compassionate people who want to save their lives will result in better animal welfare and humane treatment. We feel that there is a desperate need for an effective and practical legal reform so that the dogs are raised at home or at least in an independent space, and not tied up outside and neglected.
