Friendship City Campaign
Seoul, South Korea – Budapest, Hungary

Sister and Friendship City Agreements are formed between two cities with the aim of being mutually beneficial (for trade, cultural exchanges, business links etc., and to foster friendship), and many cities throughout the United States and around the world have such ‘twin cities’ all over South Korea. We can bring the unacceptable practices of South Korea’s dog meat trades to the attention of the relevant City Mayors and their Offices, and to urge them, in the spirit of friendship and for the good of the Korean people, to reach out to their counterparts in South Korea, asking them to enforce their laws and to put an end to the cruel dog and cat meat trades. KARA: National Assembly Press Conference

“The Agriculture and Fisheries Committee must immediately put forward a revision bill, and exclude dogs from livestock!”.

On February 28, KARA, along with fellow animal rights groups and Congressman Sang-don Lee, held a press conference at the National Assembly. We urged the National Assembly to process revision bills. (1) to exclude dogs from livestock and (2) to ban arbitrary slaughter of animals.

The Chinese city of Shenzhen said on last 25th that it has published a draft bill banning all food use of dogs, cats, snakes and turtles, only allowing nine animals that could be used for food. It is because the cause of corona 19 is related to eating wild animals in China. The SARS virus, which occurred in China in 2003, is also known to have originated from bats. The capture, slaughter and distribution of these unhygienic wild animals has a risk of viral disease.

Traditional ‘dog meat’ markets and dog slaughterhouses in Korea are also not safe. The slaughter and distribution of dog meats is happening unsanitary in facilities where dogs are slaughtered without permission – outside the law. In addition, dog farms are raising dogs by caging in an environment of serious animal abuse, and they commit a brutal slaughter. The dog-eating industry must be stopped to save more than a million dogs a year from abuse and to protect the health and safety of people from the dangers of viruses that can be spread by dog meat and other wildlife distribution.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Committee is constantly turning a blind eye to the bills already proposed by the National Assembly. The Committee should accept and pass the proposals and the years-old wishes of the people. KARA will continue to speak up to the Committee and the congressmen that are responsible of passing the proposals.
