Last July, we broadcasted a program that reported shocking truth about “pet dogs” such as Shih Tzu and Maltese being sold as meat dogs.

A lot of the viewers were shocked to find that the dog meats we have collected as samples were contaminated with disease causing germs and bacteria.

A lot of people are waiting in line to buy dog meat. We were able to easily witness the scene of dog being slaughtered by electrocution.

From what you can tell by looking at them, dog meat looks like those of the “meat dogs” (“Yellow Dogs” which is bred for their meat in S. Korea but same as any other dogs of course).

Every butchers and store owners we met denied that they carry meat from “pet dogs”.

Butcher: We don’t carry “Pet dogs” meat. As you can see there are no small dogs here.

However we were able to find a Beagle which is one of the most commonly known “pet dogs” from the cage where the meat dogs are kept.

Buy these dogs! If you don’t buy them, they will all end up in freezer the day after tomorrow.

They were selling “pet dogs” as meat dogs.

We were able to find several butchered small size dogs which are clearly not “Meat dogs” (Yellow dogs are usually big in size).

We were able to find a lot of small pet dogs from the cages next to the slaughterhouses behind the market where the customers are usually not around.

So does this happen only in markets?
We visited a dog meat farm in Kyungki-province.

Farm owner was hanging a Schnauzer.

Hanging by the rope, Schnauzer stops breathing.

Then the fur is burned off with blowtorch and turned into a dog meat.

Pet dogs ending up in the dog meat market is usually homeless dogs. We don’t know where they come from.

When the situation is such as this, is it safe to eat dog meat? We have decided to find out.

We have asked Seoul Health Environmental Research Center to test 17 different dog meat samples we have collected.

The test result was shocking. Among the 17 samples tested, germ were found in 7. 6 types of common germs, 4 types of colon bacillus, 1 type of yellow staphylococcus were found above the standard expected limit.

Moreover the abuse of antibiotics on meat dogs is becoming more and more a health concern.

A dog meat farmer that we met also was using the antibiotic above what is allowed.

For a large dog weighing around 20kg, we inject around 15-20ml of antibiotic.

When the dogs treated with antibiotic is eaten while the medication is still effective in its system, it can have a life threaten effect on human.

One year after the original program aired, how have the people’s view on dog meat changed?

I was shocked after I have learned that the dog meat we eat is from pet dogs. I don’t want to eat dog meat as much.

For me, group of us get together and we buy our own dog and eat it at home. We don’t eat dogs at restaurants.

There were some people who were shocked that the pet dogs are being sold as dog meat.

Nevertheless, dog meat restaurants are very busy with customers. For many people, dog meat is still the best “heath food”.

It’s good for fighting fatigue. Even Doctors tell us to eat dog meat to recover from major illness… so it must be good for us.

Then is the dog meat safe to eat now?

10 days before the “Mal-Bok”, we revisited one of the largest dog market
in the country in the city of SeoungNam, Kyungki-province.

This is the place where the pet dogs were being butchered and circulated as meat dogs a year ago.

In the pitch darkness at 2am in the morning, dogs transported from
various places in the country are being unloaded here and there. (Moran Market in SeongNam-city, Kyungki-Province)

We went up to the dogs for closer look and we do not see pet dogs.

Dog butchers are busy slaughtering dogs in the early morning.

We have witnessed the slaughter of about 10 dogs within 2 hours just from one store.

The dogs we are seeing are mostly “Meat Dogs” (Yellow Dogs).

Has the pet dogs disappeared from the dog meat market?

We have visited the market again in the afternoon when the stores are busy with customers.

At a dog meat store… we only see meat dogs and not pet dogs in the cages in front of the store.

To find out if pet dogs are being circulated as meat dogs we looked for small size dogs.

Store owner eager to make a sale, quickly brings out a dog from the cage to show the customer.

However the dog picked out by the store owner is a “Yellow Dog”… it’s a meat dog.

Get the “Yellow Dog”. Yellow dog is not fatty and it’s very tasty.

When we asked if they sell pet dogs, she denies that they sell any pet dogs.

We cannot sell “Balbari” (a traditional Korean dog that is a considered a pet dog ). We get into trouble if we sell pet dogs as meat dogs.

We have decided to visit another market known to sell dog meats.

Owners are all denying that they sell pet dogs. They become very defensive when we asked about pet dogs.

However we were able to find pet dogs such as Shih Tzu in the back ally of the market where the customers normally doesn’t go.

Pet dogs and meat dogs are in the same cages but the store owner claims that he is just boarding the pet dog for someone.

We went to another store that performs slaughtering as well.

When we asked for pet dogs, store owner leads us to a cage behind his store.

We can see the pet dog, Alaskan Malamute, in the cage.
He admits that the Malamute is for dog meat.

He states that he slaughters whatever kinds of dog that comes in.

PD asks if the Malamute is from a dog meat farm and the store owners tells the dog is from someone’s house and used to be a pet.

While we were producing this program, we were able to hear an interesting story from a dog meat store owner.

Cocker Spaniels, Poodles,…you can’t tell what kind of dogs they are after you burn their skin.

He claimed that the dogs sold as already slaughtered and processed are all pet dogs.

Dogs that are completely processed are easily found in the markets.

So are the pet dogs turned into meat dogs still being circulated in this market?

Soon after, a women who is carrying a pet dog approached us and started talking to us.

She has heard that we were looking for pet dogs and approached us.

At her booth, there were many pet dogs. She is urging us to buy her dogs saying that the pet dogs taste better.

As we are hesitating, the women even tells us that she will show us where we can have these dog slaughtered cheap.

She said that we can get a dog slaughtered and processed to be ready to eat for only around 1,5000Won (little less than $14 USD) per dog.

For the dog traders like herself, there is a discount so it’s only 10,000Won (around $9 USD) per dog.

In cautious atmosphere, pet dogs were still being sold as meat dogs.

While producing this program we were able to witness pet dogs being slaughtered.

A market in the city outside of Seoul…dogs and chickens are in the cages.

However we don’t see any meat dogs… we only see pet dogs.

When an order is received, rope is tied around a Maltese’s neck and taken inside the store.

Store owner hesitates about showing us slaughtering this Maltese.

Stay there! Don’t come in here! You are not supposed to see this.

After shocking the Maltese with electrical device, he beats the Maltese. The Maltese yelps.

Then he puts the Maltese into a machine that was just used to remove feathers from chicken.

After he take the Maltese out of the machine, he puts him into a pot of boiling water to remove the remaining fur.

For the skilled dog slaughterer, this Maltese is only a meat.

This dog is young so the meat should be tender and tasty. This dog is not fat either.

We asked where the dogs are from and the store owner tells us that people
abandon them after they get tired of care for them.

Within 30 minutes this Maltese has turned into a dog meat.

Homeless pet dogs and dogs with unknown sources were being slaughtered and
being circulated as dog meat secretly and inhumanely.

In our last program, we have followed major suppliers of these pet dogs.

This time we decided to follow a truck of a man who we saw supplying pet dogs in the market.

The truck stopped at a market with a sign “Pet Dog Auction Market”. Based on the name of the market, this is a place where you buy and sell pet dogs.

However the way these dogs are handled was always very rough and inhumane.

After the auction, the man we followed were loading his truck with dogs he has purchased.
