Sharing for Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE)

At the root of animal cruelty lies the commercial breeding and trade of animals. Animals commonly referred to as companion animals are often born with a price tag, a direct result of commercial breeding practices. Those who are fortunate enough to find loving homes are elevated to the status of pets and treated as members of the family. However, those who are not adopted remain nothing more than objects, commodities, and products. Such animals are treated as mere birthing machines, spending their entire lives as objects and eventually being disposed of as such.

The breeding industry is not the only way in which humans exploit animals. The use of animals in laboratory experiments is another example. However, we have been avoiding the serious and uncomfortable question of what happens to animals once their usefulness to us has ended, as we all tend to shy away from confronting our discomfort. And the recent massacre of 1400 dogs in Yangpyeong is a consequence of our reluctance to face this issue.

Any animal organization that supports the use of animals for human profit cannot be considered a legitimate advocate for animal welfare. Any organization that condones the commercial breeding and trading of animals after witnessing the mass killing of dogs in Yangpyeong is not a true animal organization. Similarly, an organization that claims animals are not objects but simultaneously allows their use as objects are guilty of self-contradiction. Any organization that opposes animal cruelty yet endorses any form of animal breeding and trading perpetuating such cruelty is also guilty of a serious contradiction.

The heart-wrenching images of a dog locked in a cage, starving and biting at the cage in an attempt to escape, demand our serious attention. It is a matter that demands thoughtful consideration, not just a few pictures that we can hastily consume to provide a shallow response.

As long as animals are commercially exploited, their suffering will never cease, and their status will never improve. We must have an honest and open conversation about what we should do with animals once they have served their purpose. We must reflect on this uncomfortable truth and work towards finding solutions. The Yangpyeong massacre is the responsibility of every member of our society to take action.

“인위적 고통은 학대! 동물의 상업적 번식과 거래가 유지되는 한, 학대와 잉여동물 폐기 절대 못 막는다.”
동물학대가 발생하는 가장 근본적인 원인은 동물의 상업적 번식과 거래입니다.
반려동물이라고 흔히 말하는 동물, 이 동물의 상업적 번식행위로 인해 동물은 애초부터 ‘얼마짜리’로 태어납니다. 물건과 같은 상태입니다. 이들이 사람들을 만나면서는 반려, 가족이라는 의미로 그 지위가 향상되지만 사람들을 만나지 못하면 여전히 물건으로 남습니다. 출산기계로 전락한 동물들은 여전히 물건으로 취급되다 결국 물건으로 폐기됩니다.
생산업 즉 번식업 뿐만 아니라 인간이 동물을 이용하는 행위가 참 많습니다. 실험동물도 그 중 하나입니다. 인간의 동물이용 행위가 끝났을 때 이 동물을 어떻게 할 것이냐는 너무나 심각한 문제이나 모두가 회피하는 문제이기도 합니다. 누구도 불편한 것을 절대 말하고 싶지 않은 이유 때문입니다.
금번 양평 1400명의 개 집단 살해사건은 우리 모두가 회피해 왔던 결과입니다.
인간의 영리를 위해 동물이 수단이 되는 것에 찬성하는 단체가 있다면 이는 동물권단체가 아닙니다. 금번 양평 개 집단 살해사건을 보고도 여전히 동물의 상업적 번식과 거래를 허용하자는 단체가 있다면 그것은 동물권단체라 할 수 없습니다. 동물은 물건이 아니다를 외치며 동시에 동물을 물건으로 이용해도 괜찮다고 허용하는 단체가 있다면 자가당착입니다. 동물의 인도적 처리는 반대하면서 그것을 유발하는 동물번식과 거래를 어떤 형태로든 지지한다면 심각한 자기모순입니다.
감금된 채 굶주려 죽기 직전 마지막 창살을 입에 물고 죽은 개들의 모습은 우리 모두가 책임지고 해결해 나가야 할 문제이지 고민 없는 섣부른 대안에 소비해도 괜찮은 사진 몇 장이 아닙니다.
동물이 상업적으로 이용되는 한, 동물의 고통은 끝나지 않으며 동물의 지위는 향상될 수 없습니다. 이번 사건을 계기로 우리가 무엇을 말 할지, 이용이 끝난 동물에 대해 어떻게 할 것인지에 대해 사회 공론화가 필요합니다. 더 이상 회피하지 말고 불편한 진실을 목도하고 성찰하며 이 문제를 풀어 나가야 합니다. 이번 사건은 우리 사회 구성원 모두의 책임입니다.
