Sharing for Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE)

Watchdog recently staged a raid on a slaughterhouse in Iksan that has been operating for 20 years. They found 35 dogs living in squalid conditions, forced into cramped cages and left to dwell on waste-covered floors. Evidence such as well-kept, color-treated fur and pet accessories like cushions, kennels, and collars suggest these animals were once cherished pets.

The butcher attempted to burn the dogs’ bodies even in the midst of the raid. His defense of having only dog food in the freezer fell short when it was found to be filled with discarded dog heads and bodies.

Despite the butcher insisting they were his property, after five hours of persistent negotiation, Watchdog managed to secure the release of all 35 dogs. It has come to light that Iksan City Hall was previously aware of the facility’s function as a slaughterhouse but did not take adequate action. Fortunately, as a result of Watchdog’s intervention, the slaughterhouse is now slated for permanent closure.

The 35 dogs are now under the protective care of the Iksan City Hall, and three of them will be taken in by CARE for treatment and will be put up for adoption. The rest will be housed at the Iksan City Shelter. Alongside local volunteers, efforts are being made to find them new homes without resorting to euthanasia.

모두가 반려견 출신들이었다
새벽 4시부터 출발하여 도착한 익산의 도살장.
안은, 발을 딛는 것조차 힘든 더러운 환경이었고.
들이닥친 후에 느꼈던 것은 이미 사방에 퍼진 역한 냄새들이었습니다.
도살장. 그곳에 한때 누군가의 가족이었던 아이들이 있습니다.
마당에는 제대로 먹지도 못한 채 팔려 온 것인지 뼈가 훤히 보일 정도로 마른 아이들도 있었고 염색과 미용을 한 아이도 있었습니다.

하루아침에 가족에게 버림당한 아이들, 자신을 도살용으로 보냈다는 것을 알고 있을지도 모릅니다. 그래서인지 유독 더 슬퍼 보입니다.
도살자는 와치독이 현장을 급습한 이후에도 다시 달려가 죽은 아이 몸에 토치 질을 하기도 하였습니다. 개 밥 밖에 없다고 둘러대던 냉동고에는 버리기 아깝다며 쌓아둔 개들의 머리와 사체가 가득했습니다.
도살자는 끝까지 남은 아이들을 내 물건이라며 포기하지 않으려 했지만 5시간에 걸친 와치독의 집요함은 결국 모든 아이들을 포기하게 하였습니다.
익산시청에서 이미 도살장이라는 사실을 알고 있었지만 제대로 조사도, 폐쇄도 하지 않았던 곳. 결국 이번의 공개 액션으로 도살장은 영구히 폐쇄되게 되었습니다.
35명의 아이들은 모두 익산시보호소로 입소 되었고, 그중 3명은 케어가 금주 내로 데리고 올 것입니다. 32명의 아이들은 익산시보호소에서 모두 안락사 없이 지역 봉사자들과 함께 입양 보내기로 하였습니다.
