Animal abuse is rampant in South Korea, even in broad daylight.
– From closed dog farms to dog slaughter houses, the path of dogs’ tears.

The dog farm in Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do was the place where dogs were slaughtered by hanging, a most torturous death. KARA had filed a complaint against the dog farm in April, but the local government reacted with a weak response and indifference, and stayed on the sidelines. Meanwhile, the owner of the dog farm sold the dogs to other slaughterhouses.

The dogs were cruelly thrown and packed into locked cages, and taken to another slaughterhouse. In such cruel situations, the extremely frightened dogs were thrown into the cages without making a single sound.

It was the slaughterhouse in Yongdu-dong, where the butcher hit the dogs with golf clubs, while the other dogs had to witness the death of their fellow dogs. KARA exposed the illegal actions of the slaughterhouse and rescued all 33 dogs who were awaiting their own slaughter.

The ‘dog meat’ industry is not just a matter of providing meat to the minority’s taste, but also an indication of many social problems and a series of brutal animal abuse.

Some people say, “Who eats dog meat these days? It will go away on its own.”

A survey we did confirmed that many dog farms were already closed or were in the process of closing down, and that many places were willing to close down.

However, it is the slaughterhouses and the distributors who continue to make profits at times like this. Distributors are buying dogs from closed dog farms. Eventually, dogs are moved to other places, abused and slaughtered.

In only one slaughterhouse, hundreds of dogs are slaughtered in one month in summer for Boknal, the dog meat “festival”. Dogs are not listed on the ‘livestock’ list of the country, but the slaughtered dogs continue to be illegally distributed and sold to restaurants from a truck with no refrigeration facilities in temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius.

The Singok-dong slaughterhouse, from where KARA rescued dogs on 17 July, is also at the center of this death distribution network.

The private sector, such as civic groups and individuals, had been trying their best for decades, but the government have allowed this situation to continue. The government must face the reality of illegalities and make a decision to enforce their own laws. Only the declaration of an end to the dog meat industry in the country can change this reality.

KARA will make efforts to speak up about the illegality and the brutal reality, and to speed up the end of the dog meat industry in this country.

<2021년 대한민국 경기도 광명시, 대낮에 벌어진 동물학대 현장>
– 개들의 눈물의 행로 : 폐쇄 개농장에서 개도살장으로

경기도 광명시 개농장은 개를 목매달아 도살하던 곳으로 카라는 지난 4월 해당 개농장을 정식 고발했지만, 지자체에서 행정 단속만 하고 방관하는 동안 개농장 주는 개들을 다른 도살장에 팔아 넘겼습니다.

개들은 물건처럼 구겨지고 던져지며 철창에 갇혀서 다른 도살장으로 옮겨졌습니다. 공포스러운 상황에서 극도로 겁에 질린 개들은 소리 한 번 내지 못하고 마구잡이로 철창에 던져집니다.

그 이동 경로를 추적해서 찾아낸 곳이 바로 골프채로 개들을 때리는 도살자가 있던 곳, 천상이의 죽음을 목격해야 했던 #경기도용두동도살장 이었고. 카라는 도살장을 고발하고 33마리의 개들을 전원 구조했습니다.

개식용 산업은 단순히 누군가의 기호의 문제가 아니라 번식에서 도살, 유통에 이르기까지 모든 과정이 불법으로 점철되어 있으며, 참혹한 동물학대의 연속인 사회적 문제의 집결체입니다.

‘요즘 개고기 누가 먹나요, 그냥 두어도 알아서 없어질 것’ 등의 이야기를 하는 이들도 있습니다.

실제 카라에서 경기도 개농장을 조사한 결과 많은 개농장들이 이미 폐업했거나 폐업의 수순을 밟고 있었으며, 폐업 의사가 있는 곳도 상당함을 확인 했습니다.

하지만 오히려 이러한 때에 특수를 누리는 것이 도살장과 중간 유통업자들입니다. 문을 닫는 개농장의 개들을 중간 유통업자들이 사들이고 있는 것입니다. 결국 개들은 장소만 이동될 뿐 다른 곳으로 옮겨져서 다시 학대 받고 도살됩니다.

도살장 한곳에서만 여름철 같은 경우에는 한달에 수백마리의 개들을 도살하기도 합니다. 도살된 개들은 한 마리에 수십만원씩 받고 거래됩니다. 개는 식품공전에 등재되어 있지도 않지만, 도살된 개는 불법 유통되어 30도를 웃도는 날씨에 냉장 시설도 없는 트럭에 실려 음식점에 팔려갑니다.

카라에서 7/17(토) 새벽 적발해 내고 개들을 구조한 #의정부신곡동도살장 역시 이러한 죽음의 유통망 중심에 있는 곳입니다.

언젠가 알아서 없어질 것이라고 그냥 두기에는 분뇨 및 오폐수로 인한 환경오염, 방역 위생, 불법건축물 등 그 문제가 너무 심각합니다. 무엇보다 동물학대의 온상으로 살아있는 생명들이 처참하게 죽어가고 있습니다. 심지어 남양주시의 사례처럼 유기견이나 지자체 보호소에 입소한 개들도 개농장으로 흘러 들어갑니다.

정부와 국회의 방관이 이러한 사태를 만들었으며, 시민단체와 개인 등 민간에서 이런 상황을 두고만 볼 수 없어 수십년간 사력을 다해오고 있습니다.

정부와 국회는 불법이 난무하는 현실을 직시하고 결단을 내려야 합니다. 정부와 국회의 개식용 종식 선언만이 이러한 현실을 바꿀 수 있습니다.
