Sharing for Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE)

Sarang’s story strikes a chord in the hearts of animal lovers. It all started with a fateful day when Sarang went outside to relieve herself, and was hit by someone, causing permanent nerve damage that left her disabled. The sweet pup, like her elderly owner who also lived with polio, now faced a new reality filled with difficulties and uncertainties.

Despite the daunting prospect of costly medical treatments, Sarang’s owner refused to give up on her, buying her a wheelchair that would allow her to walk on two legs. He cared for her with unwavering devotion, until his own health deteriorated, making it difficult to keep a disabled dog who needed daily assistance with her bowel movements. After months of postponing his own medical treatment, he made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Sarang.

When the news reached Care, we were already struggling to manage a large population of over 800 dogs. The thought of taking in a disabled dog who needed daily assistance was daunting, as it would be difficult to find her a suitable adopter. But despite the challenges, we decided to take Sarang in, to do what they could for her, whether it meant medical treatment or adoption.

When we went to pick her up, we found the sweet pup eagerly bouncing around her owner, in her wheelchair, full of life and energy. As they prepared to say goodbye, the old man burst into tears, knowing that he would miss her terribly.

Sarang is currently in a foster home, where she is undergoing rigorous rehabilitation. We are incredibly grateful to her foster family, who are taking care of her and helping her recover. However, she will still need to undergo monthly rehabilitation sessions, which will require a committed and loving owner who is willing to go the extra mile.

CARE is looking for a domestic adoption for Sarang, hoping to find a family that will give her the love and care she deserves. She is a sweet and energetic dog, who deserves a second chance at life. Despite her disability, she has so much love to give, and we believe that with the right family, she will thrive.

“제 몸에 장애가 남은 줄도 모르고 그저 깡총거리며 뛰노는 사랑이. 할아버지는 결국 눈물을 흘리고 말았습니다.”
사랑이를 보는 것이 살아생전 마지막일지 모른다고 생각하셨겠지요. 소아마비로도 꿋꿋하게 살아오신 할아버지의 눈에서 참았던 눈물이 터져 나왔습니다.
“동물도 자기 운명이 있나 봐요, 우리 사랑이가 이제 저보다 훨씬 좋은 환경에서 살게 되는 거지요? 정말 감사합니다.”
서울역에서 케어와 만난 할아버지. 부산에서 서울역까지 사랑이를 데리고 휠체어를 타고 힘겹게 오셨습니다. 아픈 몸으로 빨리 병원 치료를 받아야 함에도 불구하고 사랑이를 길러줄 곳이 없어, 할아버지는 병원 입원도 계속 미룰 수밖에 없었습니다.
그렇게 고민만 하다 수개월이 흘렀습니다. 더 이상 병원치료를 미룰 수 없던 할아버지. 결국 아무 곳에도 사랑이가 갈 수 없다면, 병원에 데려가 편히, 고통 없이 눈 감게 해주어야겠다는 생각까지 하셨다고 합니다. 6월 12일, 할아버지와 사랑이는 공원에서 시간을 보내고 있었습니다. 어떤 사람이 우연히 다가왔고 할아버지는 자신의 처지와 생각에 대해 이야기하게 되었습니다. 사랑이 닮은 아이를 별나라로 보낸 적이 있는 그 사람은 케어로 전화를 하였습니다.
“사랑이 좀 받아주실 수 있나요?”
하지만 케어는 받아준다는 답을 할 수 없었습니다. 이미 보호동물이 800여마리. 피학대동물도 다 받을 수 없는 상황에 누군가의 포기하는 반려견을 받을 수는 없었습니다. “입양처나 임시보호처를 알아봐 드릴게요.” 라고, 어쩌면 무심한 답을 드릴 수밖에 없었습니다. 하지만 배변도 혼자 못하고 하루에 수차례 짜 주어야 하는 아이를 누가 입양할까? 건강한 아이들도 다 못가고 있는데…“ 라며 선뜻 공지를 올리지도 못했지요. 그로부터 한 달, 할아버지는 계속 기다렸습니다. 더는 미룰 수 없어 케어는 사랑이를 일단떠안기로 결정했습니다. 치료가 가능하다면 치료하고, 끝까지 입양처를 찾아보기로 했습니다.
케어와 만난 할아버지. 서울역 바닥에 사랑이를 내려놓고 사랑이 자랑을 하느라 여념이 없습니다. “아직 뒷다리에 힘이 조금 남아 있어요,,,” 사랑이가 다시 버림받을 까 봐 두려우셨는지 이 말 저 말 늘어놓습니다. 휠체어를 채워주니 신이 나서 서울역 바닥을 누비는 사랑이. 할아버지와의 이별은 생각도 못하는 녀석이 두 발로도 좋다고 여기저기 뛰어 다닙니다.
장애인 할아버지 따라 그만 장애견이 돼 버린 사랑이. 혼자 용변을 보러 밖에 나갔다가 그만 누군가에게 맞아 신경이 손상되어 버린 사랑이. 할아버지가 관리를 못 해 그렇다고 비난해도 어쩔 수 없겠지만 할아버지로서는 최선을 다 했습니다. 사고를 당한 사랑이를 치료하고자 노력했고, 수급자의 능력을 벗어나는 것을 알게 된 후 휠체어를 사서 앞발로나마 걷게 해주었습니다. 불편하면 쉽게 유기하는 이 사회에서, 우리보다 더 불편한 할아버지는, 배변도 스스로 할 수 없는 사랑이를 끝까지 포기하지 않았습니다.
할아버지가 휠체어를 타고 가면 뒤쳐질 세라 저 자신도 휠체어를 타고 신나게 따라다니던 사랑이. 그렇게라도 끝까지 함께 살며 행복했다면 얼마나 좋았을까요.
마지막 인사를 건네고 휠체어로 뒷걸음치며 할아버지는 사랑이를 천천히 보고 또 보고, 눈을 떼지 못하다가 그만 울음을 터트렸습니다. 함께 고생했던 세월만큼이나 사랑이를 잊기가 힘드시겠지요.
할아버지처럼이라도. 그렇게 뒤뚱거리면서라도. 사랑이가 걸어주면 참 좋겠습니다.
