Animal Rescue Korea 119 (ARK119) (Director Lim Yeong-Ki) announced that he has opened an abandoned animal adoption center. The Centre is just a 3-minute walk from Munrae Station in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. There were 130,000 abandoned animals in 2019 in South Korea, and according to news reports this year: due to the coronavirus pandemic, the abandonment rate had increased by more than 30% in the first half of 2020 compared to last year. Sponsorships at abandoned dog shelters declined, and the number of volunteers were significantly reduced. It is predicted that the opening of the Animal Rescue Korea 119 Abandoned Animal Adoption Center will bring new hope during such a depressing time.
Animal Rescue Korea 119 Director Lim Yeong-Ki states, “In order to reduce abandonment of animals, regulations on production and sales should be further strengthened. Also, the government should impose strong punishment for the crime of abandoning animals.” Likewise, he appealed for more citizen’s awareness in relation to the pet trade sector, stating that: “People should think about the act of buying and selling life easily in a so-called pet shop. They need to have strong sense of responsibility for it.”
Animal Rescue Korea 119 Adoption Center plays three major roles:
• First, a meeting place between citizens and abandoned animals;
• Second, a student volunteer service and education about respect for life, and
• Third, a warm welcoming sanctuary to enable dogs and cats to find their forever family
Animal Rescue Korea 119 Adoption Center is conveniently located near the subway station, just 3 minutes walk from Munrae Station on Line 2. The center can accommodate up to 20 abandoned dogs and 10 cats, and aims to adopt out 200 dogs per year.
