Your Friendship City, Chuncheon, South Korea, is ignoring their city’s illegal dog meat industry. Instead, it has arrested several animal rights advocates trying to stop these illegal dog farms/dog slaughterhouses. “It’s already been about 3 weeks. We are creating a new history. This time in Chuncheon, we are carrying out a truly massive task of abolishing as many as four slaughterhouses at once.

Project name: “Large-Scale Dog slaughterhouses Shutdown Project”

From 1 am on August 18th. It was a site raid that began after 13 hours of fighting, moving from Seoul → a region → a region → Chuncheon, tracking, and hiding. Slaughterhouses in this area claim to be ‘legal dog slaughterhouses’ and are proudly operated in the region, even displaying signs saying they are so-called ‘dog slaughterhouses.’

On this day, the butcher said in a phone call with someone, “No… I can’t slaughter it today… Not today…” and the butcher at the slaughterhouse that was raided on 9/5 also said, “Oh my… I finally got caught.” In the past, many animal groups and activists came to report and held several protests, but the dog slaughter was still persistent.

In addition to shutting down four slaughterhouses at once throughout Chuncheon, CARE/Watchdog is also making it possible for animal abuse to be investigated through autopsies on dog corpses for the first time in Korea.

“Arrest everyone here!!” This is what the Chuncheon police shouted at the animal rights advocates and citizens. The police refused to confiscate the dog’s body as evidence, and the activists and citizens used their whole bodies to protect the evidence. Thanks to the Chuncheon Police’s helping the dog butchers, such as threatening to report the citizens and helping the trucks that carried dog carcasses to disappear, the butchers cursed, assaulted, and even sexually harassed innocent citizens. And as you know, two activists have been arrested.

A veterinarian from Chuncheon was testing a kit while muttering, “What Corona? It will be cured naturally.” And then the Corona kit disappeared (primary evidence of abuse). This whole moment feels like a movie. I can’t believe it.

Nonetheless, we are making progress. This is possible because we gathered together with all of you. It’s not over yet. Our tenacity and persistence are demonstrated when we work ‘together.’ Let’s set a precedent ‘together.’”

We ask that you contact the Chuncheon Police and Chuncheon City immediately and ask for the immediate release of the animal rights advocates and ask them to take legal action against the dog farms/dog slaughterhouse operators that the animal rights advocates have reported to the Chuncheon authority.

Do you think Vejle should be a Friendship city to any city that allows dogs and cats to be tortured and eaten by people?

In Chuncheon, there are numerous dog farms, dog slaughterhouses, dog meat restaurants, and so-called “Health Centers” where they serve soup made of dog meat as an elixir. Dogs suffer their entire lives in filthy, feces-encrusted raised wire cages in utter misery, only to be slaughtered in the most horrific ways. They are killed by electrocution, hammer strikes to their head and necks, being hung, being beaten to death, having their throats slit, being burned alive with a blowtorch, or being thrown into a vat of boiling water while still alive. In many places in Chuncheon, dogs are killed in full view of other terrified, caged dogs who tremble with terror. These poor dogs are often burned alive in their cages, unable to escape. In addition, people’s beloved pets are often stolen and sold to these businesses, where they meet the same horrific fate. Dogs and puppies who died of diseases are tossed away like garbage, often left in front of cages to rot while the mother dogs watch and cry out in despair for their dead babies.

The Korean internet searches resulted in hundreds of Health Centers that commonly sell dog/cat elixirs (also known as dog soju and cat soju) and dog meat restaurants in Chuncheon.

Would you please urge Chuncheon Mayor Yook Dong-han to close down all illegal dog farms and slaughterhouses, markets, truckers, and restaurants that serve their products? We ask that you contact your counterpart in Gangwon Province immediately and ask for the immediate release of the animal rights advocates currently wrongly imprisoned and urge Gangwon Province to take legal action against the illegal dog farms/dog slaughterhouse operators that the animal rights advocates have reported to the Chuncheon authority.
