Illegal dog farm in Gwangju raided by the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police.

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-Yeon shared on his YouTube channel a video of a raid of a gruesome dog farm by the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police. Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police had raided dog farms/slaughterhouses in the past. But the fact that the Governor shared a video of the raid online with a message opposing animal cruelty is significant and a sign of changes happening. Gyeonggi province is the most populous and politically important province in South Korea.

If you were wondering if your action to fight South Korea’s dog meat cruelty is making a difference, this news should give you hope and encouragement to continue your efforts. Our relentless campaign is effective even though it’s not as swiftly acted upon as we would like. So please keep up the great work and never stop speaking for the voiceless. Also, please post a message of thank you and encouragement for more action to stop the dog meat industry on the Governor’s video. Thank you! 👉 Click HERE for the video.

Below is a translation of the Governor’s message:

To prevent animal abuse, such as the recent incident where over 1,200 dogs were starved to death in Yangpyeong, I have ordered the “Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police” to monitor and investigate cases of animal abuse.

Within four days of the directive, the police raided a horrifying scene of animal abuse at a dog farm in Gwangju Docheok-myeon, where multiple animal corpses and dozens of neglected dogs were found. The investigation is ongoing, and the farm owner is being questioned.

Thanks to the swift action of the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police, further abuse was prevented. The dogs found at the scene were immediately checked for their health, and we are working on getting Gwangju to protect them.

We are deeply grateful to the residents of Gwangju who reported the site. If there is animal abuse in your resident vicinity, please report it immediately.

Gyeonggi Province has the highest number of pet owners in the country, with 17% of households owning pets. However, many dogs are bred for profit and end up being mistreated or slaughtered when they cannot be sold. Enforcement against animal abuse is essential, but we must foster a culture of adoption, not purchasing and selling companion animals.

Gyeonggi Province, which established the “Animal Welfare Bureau,” the first among government organizations, will lead the way.

If you witness or suspect animal abuse, please report it to the Gyeonggi Province Call Center at 031-8008-5036

Video: KBS News.
