Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-Yeon shared on his YouTube channel a video of a raid of a gruesome dog farm by the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police. Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police had raided dog farms/slaughterhouses in the past. But the fact that the Governor shared a video of the raid online with a message opposing animal cruelty is significant and a sign of changes happening. Gyeonggi province is the most populous and politically important province in South Korea.

To prevent animal abuse, such as the recent incident where over 1,200 dogs were starved to death in Yangpyeong, I have ordered the “Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police” to monitor and investigate cases of animal abuse.

Within four days of the directive, the police raided a horrifying scene of animal abuse at a dog farm in Gwangju Docheok-myeon, where multiple animal corpses and dozens of neglected dogs were found. The investigation is ongoing, and the farm owner is being questioned.

Thanks to the swift action of the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police, further abuse was prevented. The dogs found at the scene were immediately checked for their health, and we are working on getting Gwangju to protect them.

Gyeonggi Province has the highest number of pet owners in the country, with 17% of households owning pets. However, many dogs are bred for profit and end up being mistreated or slaughtered when they cannot be sold. Enforcement against animal abuse is essential, but we must foster a culture of adoption, not purchasing and selling companion animals.

Gyeonggi Province, which established the “Animal Welfare Bureau,” the first among government organizations, will lead the way.

1,200여 마리의 개를 굶겨 죽인 ‘양평고물상 동물학대’와 같은 사건의 재발을 막기 위해 ‘경기도 특별사법경찰단’에 단속을 지시했습니다.

지시한 지 불과 나흘 만에 끔찍한 동물학대 현장을 적발했습니다.

광주 소재 육견농장에서 다수의 동물 사체와 방치된 개 수십 마리를 발견하고 농장주를 수사 중입니다.

농장 한쪽에선 수십 마리의 동물 뼈무덤이 발견되었습니다. 현장의 개들은 즉석에서 건강상태를 확인했고 광주시가 보호할 수 있도록 협의 중입니다.

경기도 특사경이 적극 행동에 나선 결과 추가적인 학대를 막을 수 있었습니다.

경기도는 전체 가구의 17%가 반려동물과 함께 살고 있습니다. 전국에서 가장 많은 수의 반려동물이 있습니다.

영리를 목적으로 마구 번식시킨 개가 어려서 팔리지 않으면 비참하게 되거나 도살되는 경우가 많다고 합니다. 단속도 중요하지만, 반려동물을 사고파는 것이 아니라 입양하는 문화를 조성해야 합니다. 정부조직으로는 처음 ‘동물복지국’을 만든 경기도에서부터 앞장서겠습니다.
