Action Alert! Prosecute the couple who left their two dogs tied up in the forest fire, causing one to burn to death and another to suffer severe burns.
People who commit acts of cruelty against helpless animals by exposing them to the clearly foreseeable danger of being burned to death must be held accountable and punished. We saw this heartbreaking case from the Uljin forest fire reported by Korea Animal Rights Advocates (KARA). Below is a translation of KARA’s post.
We rescued Big Mary, who had to witness Little Mary burn to death in the forest fire in Uljin.
With a strong metal leash and iron stakes deeply rooted in the ground, Big Mary and Little Mary could not escape, even when the owner’s house burned down to the ground. Little Mary ended her life burning to death in the flames. Big Mary escaped the flames as she watched Little Mary, the family she had been with for years, burn in front of her eyes. The wildfire passed, and Big Mary’s life was saved.
KARA’s activists cleaned up the burnt corpse of Little Mary and pulled the leash from the iron stake that held her. We also wanted to release her collar, but it had already melted and could not be separated from the corpse. The carcasses of chickens in the collapsed chicken coop right next door were also taken care of.
Big Mary welcomed KARA activists despite being in such a miserable environment. Her face was swollen badly due to the fire, and even to the naked eye, it was apparent she was seriously injured, so treatment was urgent. On the fourth day after the fire, Big Mary was tied up here for days, even though her wounds were expected to cause her to deteriorate quickly. KARA pursued the owner couple, who said “we will never give her up,” for two days before they would give up ownership of Big Mary.
Big Mary wagged her tail continuously while KARA pulled the metal stakes out of the ground and replaced her metal leash with a light leash. KARA gave Big Mary a new name, ‘Danbi’ (which means welcome rain or much-needed rain in Korean). Danbi is no longer a yard dog living on a 1-meter leash. Now she is unbound to the ground and ready to live with her family.
Danbi flicked her tail and left the house with the activists, stepping lightly. With a gentle and calm demeanor, she was docile all the way back to Seoul. Danbi will be treated well, and a loving family will be found for her. When her treatment is completed, an adoption notice for Danbi will be posted. We ask for your interest in Danbi, the dog who survived the terrible fire. And, once again, we wish the little dog that passed away in the devastating fire to rest in peace.
Activists are taking turns making trips to the Uljin fire area. A team spends 16-22 hours in Uljin, and there is a work vacancy, so it is difficult to upload to social media the relief situation of the Uljin forest fire site in real-time due to the hectic on-site situation. However, we will upload it without missing a beat to help protect the animals. Thank you.

Subject: Uljin County, Uljin Police, Supreme Prosecutor’s Office: Punish the dog owner couple in Uljin County who left their two dogs tied up, unable to escape from the forest fire causing one dog to burn to death and another to suffer severe burns while the owners evacuated.
Petition: https://chng.it/g9CxPXvW
To: Uljin County, Uljin Police, Supreme Prosecutor’s Office
We request that the dog owner couple in Uljin County who left their two dogs tied up unable to escape a fire, causing one dog to be burned to death and the other to be seriously injured, violating the Animal Protection Act. We demand the owners be prosecuted and punished.
Please see the photos of the two dogs: https://www.facebook.com/kara.animal/posts/4910584999028982
Our hearts have been broken thousands of times, but the photos of the dog burned to death and the other dog horribly injured is truly horrific and heartbreaking. These heartless people left their dogs tied up, knowing full well what horror awaited them. How can people of a modern nation such as South Korea, the nation of Samsung, Hyundai, Kia, LG Electronics have utter disregard for the lives of sentient animals who looked upon them as a family?
Their actions which were immoral and criminal, violated the Animal Protection Act. They must be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law. The South Korean government must take immediate measures to prevent unimaginable cruelty against dogs and cats.
An online petition is now in progress calling for your immediate action: https://chng.it/g9CxPXvW. The favor of your reply is requested and appreciated.
