Sharing for Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE)/Watchdog

Here is the summary of CARE’s annual report for 2022:

• A total of 293 animals were rescued and protected by CARE.
• 888 were “rescue only”* (from slaughter, removed from dog farms, but not protected in our shelters. Animals were handed over to the informants or the local government shelters after being rescued by us).
• 179 animals found new homes this year.
• There are another 12 rescue dogs who are scheduled to be sent for adoption next week.

By rescue, we include various activities such as making owners surrender their pet ownership, urging authorities to keep animals from their previous owners, and taking measures to improve the environment for neglected animals.

The number of animals we sent for adoption is seemingly low compared to the number of protected animals. This is mainly because we rescued over a hundred Tosa dogs from the Uljin dog farm/slaughterhouse burned in a forest fire. Considering that we primarily rescue large-sized, mixed breeds which are difficult to be adopted, we regard the result as a great success because the majority of individually-rescued dogs have already found their adoptive homes.

Our accomplishments last year resulted from our committed activists who never considered their work a job. An activist who rescued animals from a wildfire has been receiving treatment for serious skin problems due to the fire, but it has never stopped her from being anxious to resume her rescues. Another activist in charge of overseas adoption appeals to foreign organizations every morning without a day off to increase any chance of sending rescued dogs for adoption. Our activists do not hesitate to offer their own money when rescue operations are in jeopardy due to financial difficulties. Last year, the CEO of CARE quit his well-paying job to put all his effort into CARE activities with a much lower salary. Only one thing motivates and unites them: a sense of duty with compassion. This enables CARE to continue our activities with sincerity.

A new year has begun. CARE will launch the Animal Law Center this year to begin a project to comprehensively revise the Animal Protection Act. Moreover, many new activists will join Watchdog’s activities to eliminate dog meat farms. Again this year, we will continue to undermine the obstacle of injustice.

2022년 케어 구조활동 성과

케어는 작년 한 해 합산, 구조 293명 /구호 888명 /입양 179명으로 진행하였습니다.
현장을 가는 상근 활동가 ( 구조 2인 / 와치독 1인 /입양 1인 ) 외 입양자원활동가들 및 RUN 활동가들과 함께 한 결과입니다.
다음 주까지 12명의 구조견이 해외 입양을 또 갑니다.
구조는 케어가 직접 구조하고 보호한 것을 의미합니다.
구호는 피학대동물, 방치동물, 상해 동물, 떠돌이 동물들에 대해 케어가 현장에서 구조 후 제보자에게 인계하거나 학대자들을 압박해 소유권 포기를 받고 제보자가 직접 동물을 데려가 주시는 경우 및 방치동물 환경 개선과 피학대동물 집단 격리조치 등을 의미합니다
구조보다 입양 수가 적은 이유는 울진 산불 도살장의 누렁이들이 집단으로 구조되어 50명이 입양가고 남은 수가 많기 때문입니다. 그래도 케어가 위급한 동물을 구조하고 주로 중대형 믹스종의 개들이 대부분인 것을 감안한다면 개별구조된 거의 모든 개가 입양이 된 것은 매우 좋은 성과이며 케어 입양팀이 매진한 결과입니다.
케어는 동물 고통의 최전선에서 가감 없이 현실을 폭로해 왔습니다. 재난동물이 있는 현장에 늘 그렇듯 주저 없이 달려갔습니다. 산불 현장에서 동물구호활동을 벌였던 활동가는 뜨거운 열과 연기로 인해 피부에 심각한 트러블이 발생해 현재까지 치료를 받고 있기도 합니다. 하지만 단 하루도 멈추지 않고 활동합니다.
케어 활동가들은 이 활동을 ‘일’이라고 생각하지 않기에 그렇게 할 수 있는 것입니다. 누가 시켜서 하는 일이라면, 그 잔인한 개농장을 매일같이 찾아갈 수는 없을 것입니다. 자기 사업이 버젓이 있는 입양 활동가는 하루도 쉬지 않고 해외 단체와 새벽 내내 대화하며 구조견 한 명이라도 더 입양 보내고자 동분서주합니다. 또 활동가들은 단체 재정이 어려워 구조를 못할 경우 사비를 털어 내놓기도 합니다. 자신을 내세우지도 않습니다. 대표는 작년 좋은 직장을 그만두었습니다. 그리고 활동가보다 훨씬 적은 박봉으로 케어 활동에 올인하고 있습니다. 오롯이 사명감 하나로 똘똘 뭉친 이런 활동가들이 있어 케어의 진정성이 지금껏 퇴색되지 않았을 것입니다.
새해가 밝았습니다. 어제에 이은 별 다를 것 없는 오늘일지라도 새해에는 늘 새로운 다짐을 하게 됩니다.
케어는 올 한 해 <케어 동물법 센터> 가 출범하며 진행하는 ‘동물보호법 전면개정 프로젝트’에 박차를 가할 것이며 개농장을 폐쇄시키는 와치독 활동이 더 많은 활동가를 양산하도록 할 것입니다. 더 많은 시민들이 동물학대 감시자가 되도록 할 것입니다. 동물의 고통이 우리의 분노로, 우리의 분노가 열정과 집요함으로, 이 인간 중심 사회의 부정의함에 균열을 낼 것이며 결국 견고한 그 벽을 무너뜨릴 것입니다.
