Bucheon, South Korea, Shut down illegal dog meat farms, slaughterhouses, markets, and restaurants.

Campaign updated on 9/6/2022.

If you want to help fight the grisly South Korean dog and cat meat trade and make a difference in South Korea, here are a few quick actions you can take that could save millions of dogs and cats each year.

In 2017, we welcomed Mayor Kim Man-Soo’s declaration that he plans to make Bucheon a “Dog Meat-Free City.” However, he did not run for re-election in 2018. Since he left office, we have not seen any effort by the new administration to honor Mayor Kim’s commitment to end the dog meat industry in his city.

In Bucheon, there are still numerous dog meat restaurants and shops that commonly sell products made with dogs.

A Search Engine reveals the sickening scale of Bucheon’s dog meat demand.

Shown below are two search results on Naver (the most popular search engine in Korea) – the first one was for so-called “Health Centers,” which commonly sell dog elixirs and cat elixirs (also known as dog soju and cat soju); and the second one was for “dog meat restaurants.”

The searches resulted in numerous Health Centers and dog meat restaurants in the vicinity of Bucheon.

Even if half of these ‘Health’ Centers and restaurants serve dog and cat ‘ingredients’ in one form or another, imagine how many dog/cat slaughterhouses must be present in the vicinity of Bucheon to supply these outlets.

There are laws in South Korea against selling dogs and cats for consumption, yet these laws are blatantly ignored.

“The greatness and moral progress of a nation is judged by the way the people treat their animals.” – Gandhi

I am concerned that you continue to eat dog meat without any remorse or feelings for these dogs, considering all the growing concern for these animals’ welfare and safety, from millions of people around the civilized world.

I almost expect this type of behavior from some foreign countries, where the people are mostly uneducated about animal rights and their feelings, but I cannot accept the same behavior from a civilized country such as yours.

As I once heard of a pig owner, that was being accused of abuse and neglect, say to the pig’s rescuer, “Hell, it’s only a pig.” It is sad to think that anyone has such disregard for any living creature, big or small.

That type of attitude needs to change, if we ever want to end the abuse and neglect of any living creature on this planet.

I realize that eating meat has been a normal part of human civilization since the beginning of time and we will probably never all become vegetarians, but there are farm animals that have been bred and raised to provide meat for those needs.

As long as we treat these farm animals humanely in life and in death, and respect them for their contribution to our survival, I can mostly understand the eating of that meat. But in no instance do I condone eating a family pet, or any other dog or cat for that matter.

By continuing to allow the dog meat trade to continue, you are complicit in the abuse and suffering these animals endure, which is severe and has been going on for many decades.

Please STOP beating, torturing, killing and eating dog and cat meat. This is the 21st Century and you can do better for your country and the world.

Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter.
