Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

I am writing ahead of your meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. I know you will have trade, energy, and security issues to discuss.

However, I urge you to raise a profound moral issue with President Yoon: the plight of the millions of dogs in Korea who are savagely butchered each year for their meat. They are raised in wire cages and never feel a kind touch before they are blowtorched or bludgeoned to death. https://vimeo.com/748976732

South Korea has an Animal Protection Act, and slaughtering dogs for consumption violates Articles 8 and 10. Included in these same Articles is a prohibition against electrocuting dogs, routinely practiced among the thousands of dog butchers across the country. In addition, its Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act states that dogs are officially recognized and classified as “animals” that are “prohibited from being slaughtered and distributed as food for human consumption.”

It is tragically evident that Korea’s Animal Protection Act goes unenforced.

Canada is a nation that cares deeply about animals, especially its companion animals, and, as such, must be a global leader by taking a stand against such barbarity.

As Australian moral philosopher Peter Singer has said, “If it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening, without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it.”

Please use your office to advocate for dogs in Korea. President Yoon must be held accountable for the daily horrors faced by dogs trapped on the thousands of dog farms and slaughterhouses across his country. Unlike President Yoon and Korean corporations Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and Kia, who turn a blind eye to this widespread depravity, I trust your humanity and compassion-which include a profound love and respect for the best friend humankind has ever known-will not permit you to. With respect and my best wishes,

Response from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office.

How long will the world watch untold tortures inflicted on dogs and cats at South Korea’s dog-meat markets and do nothing about it. How can you talk about “peace” and “democracy” while shocking horrors are regularly committed on defenseless, loving and innocent animals in front of your eyes! Skinning dogs and cats alive, cooking them alive and other appalling tortures shall NOT BE SILENCED, but openly directed to President Yoon. We live in 2022!

If SK wants to be engage in trade and economic advantages with the civilized world, SK must abandon their third world barbaric, cruelty and inhumane treatment of dogs the most connected, loving and helpful beings on Earth with mankind. No longer can a blind eye be turned from addressing this horror and suffering of these innocent souls. I would say as one voice to boycott all things SK if not. I would ask any world leader to enter this demand into any trade or economic dealings with SK. It must be proven that these savage acts of torture end for good whether out of just cold hearted barbarism or a black market trade for profit, it must stop. I would love to see mass boycotts of all things SK if not. In countries like America, Canada, Europe these precious beings are family members and billions are spent on them to give them better lives. Yet, the world sees horrors coming out of SK to make one physically sick from such profound acts of torture, pain and suffering, horror in primitive acts of terror. SK must stop the torture or be deemed the same calus people as in NK who are not accepted in the civilized world. Your fate should be determined in your actions!
