The Uljin dog slaughterhouse burned in a recent forest fire is still a battlefield.

The horrible situation at the Uljin dog slaughterhouse is still ongoing. The devastating effects of the recent forest fires are exacerbated by human neglect and indifference.

The dog farm/slaughterhouse owner needed large bowls to fill with food waste (usually rotten and moldy salty kimchi waste) called “Jjambap.” So, he obtained gas cylinders installed in gas cars from a junkyard, cut them in half, and used them as food bowls for the dogs.

There were many uncut gas cylinders at the site. The dried excrement piled up under the raised wire cages where the dogs are kept was sufficient to ignite into highly flammable materials.

At the time of the forest fire, witnesses in the vicinity of the slaughterhouse said that they heard several explosions and a lot of noise. The dogs at this farm/slaughterhouse that were not directly affected by the fire had burn injuries that were not initially visible, thus unnoticed.

It appears the injuries were due to close proximity to the gas cylinders. While caring for the remaining dogs at the dog farm, CARE removed the injured dogs out of the slaughterhouse to treat their injuries.

The Uljin County Office continues to rarely answer calls and has yet to come to the scene and take action.

It is difficult to tolerate their inaction and act of neglect and indifference to the injured animals in this disaster. Their issue of a press release was merely a pretense of helping the victims.

At this point, three weeks have passed, and CARE activists continue to take turns going back and forth from Seoul because they are sick physically and emotionally with sorrow for the animals and the nonaction of the government.

We would be grateful if the volunteers could come even on weekdays.

These are the photos of the dogs with newly discovered burn wounds, arriving and being admitted at a hospital in Seoul.

Why can’t the municipalities protect slaughterhouse dogs?

While CARE activists and volunteers are working around the clock trying to find homes for as many rescued dogs as possible, more new lives are born. This cruel cycle of the dog meat industry can only end if the South Korean government bans dog meat consumption.

Of the 150 dogs on the farm, 50 are expected to be adopted, but the futures for the remaining 100 are unclear. Local governments are ignoring CARE and want to hand over their responsibilities of taking ownership and providing protection to these dogs. Presidential candidates who promised to improve animal welfare during the election are also turning a blind eye to the plight of these poor dogs.

This dog with one leg missing was found at this dog farm and adopted.

Phone recording of Uljin County: Uljin county officials suggest that they should “give the butcher time to dispose of the dogs”… They don’t want to take the responsibility of relocating the dogs to their county shelter and providing medical care, and giving them a chance to be adopted. If the dogs are not adopted, the county government should humanely euthanize them. That is a much more compassionate option than being sold to other cruel dog farmers and continuing the life of misery for these poor dogs who have already suffered so much.

“울진 불에 탄 개도살장은 아직도 전쟁터”
울진 개도살장 상황은 여전히 좋지 않습니다. 산불에 의한 자연재해도 분명한 사실이지만 이 도살장의 화재는 ‘인재’ 이기도 했습니다.
도살장 주인은 개들의 밥그릇에 짠밥을 가득 부어 놓고자 대용량 식기가 필요했습니다. 그래서 가스 차에 장착된 가스통들을 폐차장에서 구해 와서 반을 잘라 그릇으로 활용했습니다.
아직 자르지 않은 가스통들도 현장에 많이 있었고 뜬장 밑에 가득 쌓인 배설물들과 여기저기 빈 부지에 방치한 굳어버린 배설물들이 가연성 높은 물질로 발화되기에 충분했습니다.
산불 당시 도살장 주변의 목격자들은 여기 저기 ‘펑!’ 하고 터지는 것을 목격하였고소리를 많이 들었다고 합니다.
도살장에 남은 개들은 산불 주변에 있지 않았던 개들도 하나하나 보이지 않던 화상상처가 드러나기 시작했습니다. 가스통들 주변에 있던 것이 원인인 듯 하며 케어는 현재 남은 개들 중 관리하다 발견되는 상해를 치료하기 위해 도살장에서 하나 둘 도살장을 나오게 하고 있습니다.
울진군청은 여전히 전화를 거의 받지 않고 현장에도 오지 않고 있습니다. 재난 상황, 상해 입은 동물을 이렇게 방치하고 관심을 두지 읺는 지자체가 그럴듯한 보도자료 하나 내보내 마치 피해 동물을 도와주는 것처럼 하는 행태를 용납하기 어렵습니다.
3주가 지난 이 시점, 케어 활동가들도 몸이 아파 교대로 서울을 오고 가는 중입니다.
