Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger responds with compassion and affirmative action to Sister City Campaign
Despite not having communicated with the Seoul Guro since exchanging visits ten years ago, the Mayor of Chapel Hill Pam Hemminger responded to our Friendship City Campaign with compassion and, moreover, affirmative action.
Thanking us for bringing an issue she was not aware of to her attention, Mayor Hemminger affirmed that Chapel Hill strongly believes in the humane treatment of animals and supports the efforts of organizations like SaveKoreanDogs.org to rescue, raise awareness, and reform.
We would like to sincerely thank her for listening to our concerns and taking action.

Dear Mayor Hemminger and the City Council members,
I would like to thank you for responding to our concerns raised via the recent petition on Change.org about the mistreatment, torture and consumption of companion animals in Chapel Hill’s Friendship City Seoul Guro District.
Moreover thank you for speaking up for the Korean animals by contacting your Congressional representative regarding the matter, encouraging them to consider House Resolution 30, and suggesting that Representative Alcee Hastings add South Korea to the Resolution. We have been campaigning to request help from the United States’ Ambassador to Korea Mark Lippert but I will certainly do as you suggested and contact the new US Ambassador to Korea once they are appointed, and ask them for their assistance as well.
Both domestic and international pressure on this issue is required if we are going to incite some real change in South Korea, so I kindly urge that you reach out to Seoul Guro District until affirmative action has been taken by their authorities to end the horrific and illegal practice of the dog and cat meat trade for good. Thank you again for your efforts here.
