Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger responds with compassion and affirmative action to Sister City Campaign

Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger

Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger

Despite not having communicated with the Seoul Guro since exchanging visits ten years ago, the Mayor of Chapel Hill Pam Hemminger responded to our Friendship City Campaign with compassion and, moreover, affirmative action.

Thanking us for bringing an issue she was not aware of to her attention, Mayor Hemminger affirmed that Chapel Hill strongly believes in the humane treatment of animals and supports the efforts of organizations like SaveKoreanDogs.org to rescue, raise awareness, and reform.

We would like to sincerely thank her for listening to our concerns and taking action.

Dear Mayor Hemminger and the City Council members,

I would like to thank you for responding to our concerns raised via the recent petition on Change.org about the mistreatment, torture and consumption of companion animals in Chapel Hill’s Friendship City Seoul Guro District.

Moreover thank you for speaking up for the Korean animals by contacting your Congressional representative regarding the matter, encouraging them to consider House Resolution 30, and suggesting that Representative Alcee Hastings add South Korea to the Resolution. We have been campaigning to request help from the United States’ Ambassador to Korea Mark Lippert but I will certainly do as you suggested and contact the new US Ambassador to Korea once they are appointed, and ask them for their assistance as well.

Both domestic and international pressure on this issue is required if we are going to incite some real change in South Korea, so I kindly urge that you reach out to Seoul Guro District until affirmative action has been taken by their authorities to end the horrific and illegal practice of the dog and cat meat trade for good. Thank you again for your efforts here.

I am SO relieved that this has finely come to your notice. I IMPLORE you to please do everything you possibly can to put an end to this horrific practice. No living creature on this earth deserves such torture. Animals feel stress, pain and fright exactly as we do…we are ALSO animals. I can hardly sleep at night because of this….this horror just has to stop. There is NOTHING that excuses this. Religion? God would hardly want to see his beautiful creatures treated like this. Dogs and horses have served man throughout history, saving our lives, loyal companions in war and peace…right to the end in every conceivable manner. WHY should they have to be rewarded in this way….this is cruelty beyond measure. To be beaten, dragged, hung up, kicked, thrown alive into boiling pots, skinned alive….these poor innocent animals are put through every possible nightmare imaginable. This is almost worse than what the Jews experienced in the concentration camps or on par. Look at their faces. Could you do that to them? How can ANYONE do that to them…these wonderful wonderful animals. We ALL need to speak out for them. PLEASE take this VERY VERY seriously. If one can’t treat animals decently with the love and respect they deserve, then hardly can a fellow human receive the same.
