Sister Province Campaign – Gyeonggi Province, South Korea – British Columbia, Canada

✳️ This campaign replaces our previous campaign.

British Columbia: Tell your Sister Province, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, that you are opposed to the torture and consumption of dogs and cats.

If you want to help fight the grisly South Korean dog and cat meat trade and make a difference in South Korea, here are a few quick actions you can take that could save millions of dogs and cats each year.

Gyeonggi Province became a Sister Province of British Columbia, Canada, in 2008.

On May 31, 2023, Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-Yeon met with David Eby, the Premier of British Columbia, Canada, to discuss collaboration between the two regions on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Canada and the 15th anniversary of the sisterhood between Gyeonggi Province and British Columbia. They are confined to raised wire cages in cramped spaces where they cannot even turn around. Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE).

The “Special Bill to end the breeding, slaughter, and distribution of dogs for consumption and dog meat consumption” was passed by South Korea’s National Assembly on January 9, 2024, and it mandates a 3-year grace period for all operations to cease. However, despite this legislation, there has been no change, and the situation remains dire for the dogs confined in dog farms across the country.

In Gyeonggi province, there are numerous dog farms, slaughterhouses, markets, and restaurants where the dogs, who are tortured their entire lives, end up being slaughtered in the most inhumane ways, such as by electrocution, hanging, or beating and then thrown into boiling water – sometimes while they are still alive. In many places, dogs are being killed in full view of other terrified, caged dogs, and this takes place in broad daylight. In addition, many abandoned and stolen former pets end up in this industry and are subject to the same cruelty.

A Search Engine reveals the sickening scale of Gyeonggi Province’s dog meat demand.

Two searches on Naver (the most popular search engine in Korea) – one was for so-called “Health Centers” that commonly sell dog elixirs and cat elixirs (also known as dog soju and cat soju), and the second one was for “dog meat restaurants” – resulted in hundreds of Health Centers and dog meat restaurants in Gyeonggi Province.

Even if half of these “Health” Centers and restaurants serve dog and cat ‘ingredients’ in one form or another, imagine how many dog/cat slaughterhouses must be in the vicinity of Gyeonggi Province to supply these outlets.

There are laws in South Korea against selling dogs and cats for consumption, yet these laws are blatantly ignored.

Disgraceful how humans behave. Cruelty and abuse are what they seem to love just to feed others, for commercial purposes. Animals can’t help being born. They are just souls in helpless bodies.

Stop the torturous activity immediately. It is against all laws of morality. It is equal to human trafficking xxx

I had my doubts that this evil trade would truly cease. Obviously the South Korean Government were not strict enough with enforcing the ban, as some people are clearly not paying attention to it.

It’s so sad to think that so many doesn’t see or think that this is an evil business. Without a conscience and a soul, life is just to exist with no hope of joy and love to give or to receive. Thank goodness for CARE, the angels that prove that compassion and pity is there to save the victims of such grotesque cruelty.
