Sister City Campaign – Yongin, South Korea – Fullerton, California

Campaign Updated 4/22/2023.

Fullerton, California: Tell Sister City, Yongin, South Korea, that you oppose the torture and consumption of dogs and cats.

If you want to help fight the grisly South Korean dog and cat meat trade and make a difference in South Korea, here are a few quick actions you can take that could save millions of dogs and cats each year.

Yongin became a Sister city to Fullerton, California, in 2004.

In Yongin, there are numerous illegal dog farms and slaughterhouses markets, and dog meat restaurants where the dogs, who have been tortured their entire lives, end up being slaughtered in the most inhumane ways, such as by electrocution, hanging, or beating, and then thrown into boiling water – sometimes while they are still alive. In many places, dogs are killed in full view of other terrified, caged dogs; and this takes place in broad daylight. In addition, many abandoned and stolen former pets end up in this industry and are subject to the same cruelty.

A Search Engine reveals the sickening scale of Yongin’s dog meat demand.

Yongin is one of the largest dog meat suppliers and consumption cities in South Korea. There are numerous dog farms and dog slaughterhouses in Yongin. Korean web searches of Yongin turn up dozens of dog meat restaurants and so-called “Health Centers” that commonly serve soup made of dog meat as phony elixirs (also known as dog soju). Even if half of these “Health Centers” and restaurants serve dog and cat ‘ingredients’ in one form or another, imagine how many dog/cat slaughterhouses must be in Yongin to supply these outlets.

Please click HERE for the partial list of numerous dog farms and slaughterhouses in Yongin. There could be many more large and small dog farms in Yongin. There are laws in South Korea against selling dogs and cats for consumption, yet these laws are blatantly ignored.

Call for Action

  • ☎️ Call the Fullerton mayor and the city council members.

Mayor Pro Tem Bruce Whitaker (714) 981-8474
Council Member Nick Dunlap (714) 738-6311

  • ☎️ Suggested phone message

Hello, I’m calling to speak to someone in the Mayor’s Office to ask for their help on an important issue regarding your Sister city, Yongin, in South Korea.

If I could explain: Yongin’s massive dog-meat industry is brutalizing and inflicting indescribable cruelty against the hundreds of thousands of dogs in that city, even though it is illegal under South Korean Law – but the laws are not enforced. The dog and cat meat trades involve extreme and widespread animal cruelty, and the animals suffer unimaginable pain and distress. They cannot speak for themselves, so I am calling. And I believe that your city would wish to be made aware of this issue, as you would not want to be affiliated with a city where illegal and immoral torture is being carried out on any animal, and particularly not on ones that are loyal, trusting creatures, which look up to us humans as their guardians.

These illegal trades are being allowed to continue by Yongin authorities – even though there is growing opposition from pet guardians across South Korea and worldwide.

So, I am asking you to please speak with your counterparts in Yongin to urge them to enforce their laws, not ignore them, and to show compassion to their companion animals and respect to their citizens by bringing these trades to an end.

This is the time to make a change; this is the time to stop the illegal, inhumane, and unnecessary cruelty. I know South Korea has many beautiful, admirable, and noble practices and customs worth preserving, but this is not one of them.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Here is the letter I sent to the Fullerton officials (via email and FB pages) and cc’d to the Mayor of Yongin with his own letter:
Dear Mayor Jennifer Fitzgerald and the City Council members:

Please watch the undercover videos from South Korea’s dog meat industry: http://youtu.be/3uR8R8Mu70Q

Also please watch the undercover video from the documentary trailer by the Korea Observer: https://youtu.be/T6KKIZEjofs

Let me get right to the point:
The City of Fullerton should not be a Sister city to any city that allows dogs and cats to be tortured and eaten.

These are not the acts of desperately hungry people, but of despicably callous and barbaric sadists acting **for profit**.

Searches of the Korean internet results in 317 so-called “Health Food Centers” — these commonly sell dog/cat elixirs (also known as dog soju and cat soju), PLUS 170 (!) dog meat soup restaurants in and around the city of Yongin alone.

This is not only unacceptable, this is DESPICABLE.

Please notify Yongin Mayor Chan-Min Jeong of your awareness of the worldwide protests against this horrific (and supposedly illegal) industry in their country and vehemently urge them to close down ALL dog farms and slaughterhouses, markets, truckers and restaurants who serve their products as soon as humanly possible.

An online petition calling for your support in ending the horrendous South Korean dog and cat meat cruelty is in progress: https://www.change.org/p/mayor-jennifer-fitzgerald-of-fullerton-california-tell-sister-city-yongin-s-korea-that-we-re-opposed-to-torture-consumption-of-dogs-cats

Horrified animal lovers the world over demand immediate action on this extremely troubling matter.

Thank you for your efforts to help us put an end to these atrocities.
