On the night of February 3, 2023, a contingent of Watchdog activists assembled in front of a slaughterhouse concealed behind the facade of a flower shop, making it difficult to identify its true purpose from the outside. However, upon closer inspection, the evidence of the brutal operations within was unmistakable. Animals, dozens of dogs and goats, could be seen waiting in line, trembling in fear, for their turn to be brutally dispatched. Nightly, the place began to betray its true purpose, the slaughter of dogs.

The owner of this slaughterhouse had previously been charged with violating the animal protection act, but it did little to deter him. At 1:20 A.M., Watchdog members, armed with telephoto lenses, confirmed that the slaughter was indeed about to begin, and we called the police to assist us in raiding the premises. When we broke into the facility at 3:00 A.M., we encountered a scene of carnage and utter depravity. Three dogs had already been killed, and their blood and intestines were strewn about the room. The slaughter was carried out using illegal electrical stunning machines, wires, and a multitude of gas cylinders, all evidence of the cruelty and callousness of the operation.

We took photographs of the horrific scene, the evidence we will use to bring this slaughterhouse to justice. We will not rest until this operation is shut down for good and the perpetrators brought to account for their crimes against those animals. We will request that Gijang-gun Office confiscate the remaining dogs from the owner.

“2월 3일 자정. 와치독 단원들이 부산 기장군 벌판에 모였다.
멀리서 어스름한 불빛이 켜지고 자욱한 연기가 올랐다. 이어지는 개들의 짧은 외마디 비명 소리. 그리고 털을 태우는 냄새…
도살이 분명했다”
와치독 단원들은 금요일 밤 12시. 부산 기장군 철마면의 한 도살장 앞에 모였습니다. 도살자을 없애기 위한 1단계, 조사를 위한 잠복을 시작했습니다. 도살장은 담으로 둘러싸여 있었고 담을 빙 둘러싼 바깥에는 잘 짖는 큰 개들을 묶어 놓았습니다. 철벽 방어였습니다.
이 도살장은 200여평의 대지 안에 불법 가건물들을 설치하고, 외부에서는 전혀 도살장인지 알 수 없도록 바깥에서는 꽃을 팔고 있었습니다. 마당에는 계류장을 갖추고 도살을 대기하는 공포에 질린 개 10여명과 흑염소 15명을 가둬둔 채 매일 차들이 들어오고 나가고를 반복, 새벽 도살이 대대적으로 이루어지고 있는 도살장이었습니다.
새벽 1시면 시작하는 도살은 거의 매일 아침이 되어서야 끝이 났다고 합니다.
이 도살장은 벌써 두 번이나 도살행위가 적발되어 동물보호법 위반 (1회는 동종의 동물이 보는 앞에서 죽이는 행위와 2회는 잔인한 방법으로 죽이는 행위- 전기도살)으로 벌금형을 선고받았다고 하는데도 아직까지 도살행위를 중단하지 않고 있던 것입니다.
와치독 단원 5명은 잠복을 하며 내부를 망원렌즈 등을 이용해 샅샅이 조사하였습니다. 그리고 마당에 뜬장들이 설치되어 있고 개들이 있으나 이들이 전혀 비명소리조차 내지 않고 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 새벽 1시 20분, 실내에 불이 켜지고 개들의 도살 행위가 시작되었습니다.
와치독은 보이지 않는 실내를 뚫고 들어갈 수 있도록 경찰의 힘을 빌리기로 하였습니다. 미리 경찰서에 가서 현장 출동을 요청하고 3시에 경찰과 함께 도살장 안을 들이닥쳤습니다.
1시 30분경부터 시작된 도살은 3명의 개들을 도살한 후였습니다.
커다란 황구 2명과 백구 1명. 내장이 다 튀어 나온 널브러진 개들의 몸에서는 핏물이 연신 흘러내려 지하수로 흘러들어가고 있었습니다. 절단된 개들의 몸통과 목에 선명하게 그어진 칼자국. 불법 전기 충격기와 어지럽게 설치된 불법 전기 선들, 그리고 너무나 많은 가스통들,,,,
와치독은 이 모든 불법 사항을 모조리 렌즈에 담았고 경찰은 도살자를 상대로 여러 진술들을 확보했습니다.
와치독은 이 도살장을 영구히 없앨 것입니다. 그리고 남은 개들을 기장군청이 격리조치를 하도록 요구할 것입니다.
