Sharing for Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE)/Watchdog

This is an update from the Watchdog’s raid of a slaughterhouse in Busan, Gijang-gun(county). 👉 Click HERE to see the previous post.

As we raided the slaughterhouse on February 4, 3:00 AM, a long line of wire cages greeted us, each containing desperate and hopeless dogs. What we found at the end of the line was shocking. Crouched in the corner, we discovered a Golden Retriever, curled up in a ball and emaciated beyond belief. His fur was patchy, with losses here and there, and scars marked his face as if he had been clawed by a wild beast. Evidently, this poor soul was slated to be slaughtered that night, and the fear in his eyes was palpable.

We made the owner surrender the ownership of all the dogs, and this Golden Retriever was one of them. We took him out of that hellish place, but the damage had already been done. The dog was in very poor condition – approximately 9 years old, too bony for an IV (intravenous) injection, and stage 3 heartworm. The vet declared that if we had arrived any later, he would have died of malnutrition. We were instructed to feed him before beginning the heartworm treatment, as he was too skinny to undergo the necessary procedures.

This Retriever was once someone’s pet, but how did he end up in a slaughterhouse, scarred, emaciated, and reeking of a putrid odor? It’s a question that haunts us and one that we may never know the answer to. But we know that this poor dog deserves a second chance at life, and we are determined to give it to him.

We have taken him to the hospital and are doing everything to nurse him back to health. However, the cost of his treatments and care is significant, and we need your help. We are reaching out to our supporters to help raise funds for this poor dog, who has been through so much and deserves a brighter future. 골든리트리버 생의 마지막은 도살장 한 켠이었습니다.
2월 4일 새벽 3시. 부산 기장의 도살장을 와치독이 급습했을 때 마당 에는 길게 늘어선 뜬장이 있었습니다. 플래시를 켜고 뜬장 안의 개들을 보던 중 그 뜬장의 끝. 철장 안에 앙상하게 마른 누런 개가 웅크리고 있는 것이 눈에 확 들어 왔습니다. 깡마른 몸. 털이 듬성듬성 빠지고 뼈들이 툭툭 불거져 보일 정도의 골든리트리버였습니다. 한 눈에도 봐도 심하게 상태가 나빠 보였습니다. 얼굴 여기저기에 심하게 긁힌 상처는 마치 호랑이 정도의 큰 동물이 할퀴고 지나간 것처럼 보일 정도. 와치독이 다가가자 마지막 기력을 내보려는지 일어서 보았지만 이내 겁에 질린 듯 다시 웅크렸습니다.
‘저 녀석도 오늘 밤 도살이었겠구나’
와치독이 경찰과 같이 들이닥쳐 남은 개들의 도살을 막은 후 낮에 다시 와서 전부 포기를 받고 그곳의 모든 개들과 함께 골든리트리버도 나올 수 있었습니다.
병원에 도착하여 들은 골든리트리버의 상태는 매우 심각합니다.
뼈만 남은 몸에 수액을 맞았다간 그것조차 이겨내지 못하고 죽을 수도 있는 상태
최소 9살은 돼 보이는 리트리버는 사상충 3기. 치아도 엉망이었습니다.
이대로 두었다면 영양실조로 죽었을 것이란 수의사의 소견.
지금은 당장 치료도 위험하고 무조건 잘 먹인 후 살을 찌우고 치료해야 한다는 것이었습니다.
어떤 이유로 도살장에 와 있었을까요.
너무 순하고 착해서 어떤 대상으로부터 공격을 당했는지 모르지만 얼굴은 이미 살점이 드러난 상처들이 시간이 지나 굳어버린 상태였습니다. 뜬장 안에서 다른 개들에게 당한 것일까요? 리트리버는 무서우면 얼굴을 들지 못합니다. 그래도 그렇게 웅크리고 있어서 어쩌면 더 큰 화를 당하지 않았을 지도 모릅니다.
온 몸에서 악취가 진동하는 리트리버는 정말 더러운 개농장에 아주 오랫동안 갇혀 있다가 마지막 죽기 직전 도살장에 오지 않았나 생각이 듭니다. 그곳에서 구출된 다른 개들 중 가장 악취가 심하고 상태가 좋지 않습니다. 그래도 누군가의 반려견이었을 것은 분명합니다….
어디선가 끌려와 이 긴긴 혹한의 시간을 견뎠겠지요. 제대로 서지도 못할 정도의 리트리버는 우리가 그 긴 시간의 여정을 알 수는 없지만 매우 오랜 고통이 온 몸에 배어 나오고 있기에 애써 상상하지 않아도 보이는 듯 합니다.
도살로 삶을 마감하지 않아 정말 다행입니다. 모든 개들이 숨 죽이며 도살 차례를 기다리던 순간, 도살이 멈추어졌고 뜬장의 문이 열렸습니다. 생의 끝에서 다시 새로운 생이 열린 것입니다. 가장 상태가 심각한 리트리버의 치료를 위한 긴급 모금을 시작합니다.
